Ashkan Pourkand

Ashkan was born in Tehran. He moved to United State after he received his B.S. degree in Mining Engineering from Tehran University. He received his first M.S in Geomechanics from New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, where his thesis research involved the application of image processing and particle tracking in the laboratories test. Later he joined the Robotic Interfaces lab at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and received his second Masters in Mechanical Engineering. He worked on multiple skill assessment and haptics projects for orthopedic training.

Ashkan earned a Ph.D. in the School of Computing at Utah, where his dissertation research involved the design and control of a new generation of untethered magnetic haptic display.

After defending his dissertation, Ashkan became a postdoctoral researcher with Pierre Dupont at Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School.
